Like James, his older brothers were also drafted into World War II. Benjamin (May 29, 1919-March 31, 1997) registered in the military in 1940, and Robert (April 26, 1921-August 4, 2017) and James followed two years after in 1942. However, unlike his brothers, James did not make it out of the war alive. Instead, James was listed as missing in action (MIA) for many years. Nonetheless, his legacy was carried out by his war brothers, Benjamin and Robert, who lived full lives they shared with their wives: Benjamin’s Emma Jean Hammack and Robert’s Glee Eunice Grinter.
The youngest son, on the other hand, was young enough to be able to avoid the war draft altogether. William Simmons (Born 1929-) was nine years junior to his oldest brother, Benjamin, and six years younger than James.
